John W. Hake (Jay)Jay is a graduate of the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law, where he was elected a member of the Order of St. Ives. During his studies at DU, Jay was a Senior Staff Editor of the Denver Law Review, a Wechsler National Criminal Law Moot Court Quarter-Finalist, drafted an amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court, was a Hartje Award Finalist for legal writing, received academic excellence awards in several classes, and represented appellate clients through the 10th Circuit Appellate Clinic. Prior to co-founding H&L, Jay practiced law with Hutchinson Black and Cook in Boulder, CO where he focused on commercial transactions and litigation. After leaving Hutchinson Black and Cook, Jay practiced real estate and commercial law at Tueller & Associates in Telluride, Colorado. Prior to attending law school, Jay was a business and corporate development executive for a Colorado based software company and also worked in the public sector. In his free time, Jay is an avid fly fisherman and also enjoys skiing, cycling, hiking, reading, and building bamboo fly rods. Jay practices in Salida, CO and on the Front Range. John is also a graduate of the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. While at DU, John was a Staff Editor for the Water Law Review, a member of the Natural Resources and Environmental Law Society, and a Staff Writer for The Writ, the law school newspaper. Most of the time during law school, however, John could be found debating the subtleties of the Rule against Perpetuities with Mr. Hake.
Prior to co-founding H&L, John worked for the law firms of Schlueter, Mahoney & Ross and Pryor Johnson Carney Karr Nixon, both in Denver, Colorado, specializing in construction and small business litigation and transactions, as well as insurance defense work. Upon developing his own book of business, John became a sole practitioner in 2008, in addition to practicing real estate and commercial law with Tueller & Associates in Telluride, Colorado.
When not superbly acting as your attorney, John can usually be found somewhere in the mountains, dabbling in any variety of outdoor activity.
